Remote Work

Digital Nomad in Colombia: Remote Work Guide 2026

Colombia has become one of Latin America's most popular digital nomad destinations. Medellin in particular has built a substantial remote work community, with dozens of coworking spaces, reliable fibre internet, and a cost of living that lets you live well on a moderate budget. The year-round spring climate (Medellin sits at 1,500m altitude) is a major draw.

Colombia introduced a dedicated Digital Nomad Visa in 2022, offering up to 2 years of legal residency for remote workers. The time zone (UTC-5) aligns well with US and Canadian business hours. Bogota, Cartagena, and Cali are all viable alternatives to Medellin, each with distinct lifestyles.

Visa & Practicalities

Digital Nomad Visa (up to 2 years)

Colombia's dedicated digital nomad visa (Visa V - Nomada Digital) was introduced in 2022. Requires proof of remote income of at least 3x the Colombian minimum wage (approximately $900/month as of 2026). Apply online through the Cancilleria website. Initial grant is 2 years, renewable. Alternatively, the standard tourist visa grants 90 days on arrival for most nationalities, extendable once to 180 days.

SIM Cards

Claro has the best 4G/LTE coverage nationally, including rural areas and the Coffee Region. Movistar and Tigo are solid alternatives in cities. Buy at airport kiosks or any operator shop with your passport. Tourist SIMs with 10-20GB data cost COP 30,000-60,000 ($7-14) for 30 days. eSIM options (Airalo, Holafly) are available from $8-15 USD.

Internet & Coworking

Fibre internet in Medellin and Bogota typically runs 100-300 Mbps. Coworking spaces are concentrated in El Poblado (Medellin) and Chapinero (Bogota). Medellin options: Selina, WeWork, Tinkko, Otso. Day passes: COP 30,000-70,000 ($7-17). Monthly memberships: COP 400,000-1,200,000 ($95-285). Most cafes in major cities have reliable 20-50 Mbps Wi-Fi.

Time Zone & Connectivity

Colombia is UTC-5 year-round (same as US Eastern Standard Time, no daylight saving). This aligns perfectly with North American business hours. For European teams, the 6-7 hour offset means morning overlap is limited but afternoon meetings work. Colombia has direct flights to most major US hubs (Miami 3h, NYC 5h) making it easy to attend in-person events.
