Accommodation
Hotels in Colombia: Where to Stay in Every City
Colombia offers one of the most diverse accommodation landscapes in South America. At the top end sit restored colonial mansions in Cartagena's walled city, coffee finca retreats in the Zona Cafetera, and jungle eco-lodges deep in the Amazon. At the budget end, the hostel scene is thriving and well-organised, particularly in Bogota, Medellin, and along the Caribbean coast.
Value for money is a genuine advantage. A well-located mid-range hotel in Medellin or Bogota costs a fraction of its equivalent in Buenos Aires or Santiago. In rural areas, from the Coffee Region to the Amazon, finca stays and eco-lodges provide access to landscapes and daily rhythms that no city hotel can match. We have written detailed where-to-stay guides for all cities covered on this site.

Types of Accommodation
Colonial Boutique Hotels
Restored mansions and colonial townhouses within Cartagena's walled city, Villa de Leyva's cobblestone centre, and Bogota's La Candelaria district. These typically have 8-25 rooms, courtyard gardens, and period architecture that larger chain hotels cannot replicate. Expect to pay COP 350,000-900,000 ($85-220) per night.
Eco-Lodges and Fincas
The Coffee Region (Salento, Filandia, Manizales) is known for converted coffee fincas where you sleep among the plantations. In the Amazon (Leticia), jungle eco-lodges offer wildlife excursions and indigenous community visits. Rates range from COP 200,000-600,000 ($50-150) per night, often including meals.
Budget Hostels
Colombia has a well-developed backpacker hostel network, particularly in Bogota (La Candelaria), Medellin (El Poblado and Laureles), Santa Marta, and Cartagena (Getsemani). Dorms typically run COP 40,000-80,000 ($10-20) per night. Many include breakfast, rooftop bars, and organised day trips.
Beach Resorts
San Andres island, the Rosario Islands off Cartagena, and Santa Marta's Rodadero area have resort-style accommodation ranging from all-inclusive Caribbean properties to boutique beachfront hotels. Tayrona's eco-cabins and glamping sites offer a wilder coastal alternative. Rates vary from COP 250,000-1,500,000 ($60-370) per night.
