Itineraries

Day-by-day Colombia trip plans - from the classic Bogotá–Medellín–Cartagena circuit to the Lost City trek, Coffee Region fincas, and the Caribbean coast.

Colombia's main cities are closer together than they appear, but the Andes make surface travel slow. The most efficient approach is to fly between major cities and slow down within each region - domestic flights between Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena cost $60–140 per leg booked a week ahead on Avianca, LATAM, Wingo, or EasyFly.

Classic 10-day circuit (Bogotá → Medellín → Cartagena): 3 nights in Bogotá covers La Candelaria, the Museo del Oro (free on Sundays), Monserrate cable car ($19,100 COP return), and an evening in Chapinero or Zona T. 3 nights in Medellín covers the Comunas escalators in San Javier, the MetroCable to Parque Arví, and Plaza Botero. 4 nights in Cartagena gives time for the walled city, Castillo San Felipe fort ($20,000 COP entry), a day trip to the Islas del Rosario ($80,000–120,000 COP including snorkelling), and a Getsemaní evening. Budget guesthouses in each city: $20–40/night; mid-range hotels $70–120.

Coffee Region add-on (3–4 days): Bogotá to Armenia by bus (9 hours, $20–30) or flight (35 minutes, $40–80 booked ahead). Base in Salento - guesthouses from $15/night, traditional haciendas $80–120/night. Day 1: Cocora Valley hike (4–5 hours, free trail, 4,000 COP jeep each way). Day 2: Finca El Ocaso farm tour ($7–8, 2 hours, includes cupping). Day 3: Filandia day trip or the drive to Manizales for Nevado del Ruiz views. Slot this between Bogotá and Medellín.

Lost City and Caribbean coast (7–8 days from Santa Marta): The Lost City (Ciudad Perdida) trek is a 4–5 day guided circuit only possible with one of six licensed Santa Marta operators - prices start at $350 per person all-inclusive. Wiwa Tour and Magic Tour are reliable options. Combine with 2–3 days at Tayrona National Park (60,000 COP park entry for foreigners; hammock beds at Cabo San Juan from $15/night). Cartagena to Santa Marta by bus takes 3.5–4 hours.

Full loop (14+ days): Bogotá → Coffee Region → Medellín → Cartagena → Santa Marta → Tayrona (or Lost City trek) → fly out from Cartagena or Barranquilla. Add San Andres Island (1-hour flight from Bogotá or Cartagena, $60–100) for a Caribbean beach extension. For slower travel, the Bogotá–Medellín route by bus passes through Honda and the Magdalena valley; the Medellín–Cartagena option follows the Cauca River valley.

When to book: December–March and June–August are peak dry season across most regions. Book Cartagena accommodation at least 6 weeks ahead for December–January and Semana Santa (Holy Week, March or April depending on the year) - mid-range options sell out weeks early and prices double. The Coffee Region is wettest in April–May and October–November, which affects farm trail conditions.
