3 Days in Cali: Salsa, Food & Day Trip Itinerary

Three days is the sweet spot for Cali. It is long enough to taste the barrios, learn a few salsa steps and dance somewhere that matters, but short enough that you will not run out of plans. This itinerary assumes you arrive in the morning, travel by ride app, and want a balance of culture, food and nightlife. Pair it with our Cali travel guide for background and our things to do in Cali page for more options.

Before you go

  • Fly in: Alfonso Bonilla AragΓ³n International Airport (CLO) is roughly 20 km from the centre. A registered taxi costs approximately COP 50,000 to 70,000 as of 2026.
  • Best months: see when to visit Cali.
  • Safety habits: read is Cali safe once before you land.
  • Booking ahead: reserve a salsa class and a tour in advance via Cali tours.

Where to base yourself

Choose by style, not by price alone. Our Cali neighbourhoods guide compares the options in depth.

  • San Antonio for colonial streets, bars and walkability.
  • Granada for restaurants and a calm evening scene.
  • Chipichape (north) for hotel comfort. Hotel Spiwak Chipichape and Hotel Dann Carlton Cali are both established options with rates from approximately COP 280,000 per night as of 2026.

For the full breakdown, see where to stay in Cali or search Cali hotels.

Day 1: Barrio San Antonio and the Cali basics

Morning (9:00). Start in San Antonio. Walk up to the small plaza and its white colonial chapel, then enjoy the viewpoint over the city. Wander the craft shops and cafes without rushing. Cash is useful here.

Late morning. Taxi to Cristo Rey, the 26-metre statue above the city. Entry to the viewing area is approximately COP 15,000 as of 2026. Go before noon when haze is lighter.

Lunch. Head to Granada. Try Valle del Cauca dishes such as sancocho de gallina or a plate of local fried fish. Our Cali food guide lists current favourites and our best restaurants in Cali page covers more.

Afternoon (3:00). Salsa class. A private or small-group lesson of one to two hours costs from approximately COP 30,000 to 80,000 per person as of 2026. See salsa dancing in Cali for schools. Book through our Cali salsa activity guide or the Cali salsa tour.

Evening. Early dinner and a quiet night, or try a first, gentle salsa venue from the salsa scene guide. Return by ride app.

Day 2: Zoo, museum and a proper salsa night

Morning. Visit ZoolΓ³gico de Cali, which opens 9am to 5pm. Adult entry is approximately COP 35,000 to 40,000 as of 2026. Allow two to three hours.

Lunch. Eat near the river or in Granada.

Afternoon. Museo La Tertulia is a contemporary art museum on the western side of the city with views across the river valley; check current hours before you go. If it is hot, rest at your hotel.

Evening. Dinner in Granada, then the main event. Go to one of the venues in our best salsa clubs in Cali list. Most get busy after 10pm. Take a ride app both ways. If you want a broader nightlife overview, see Cali nightlife.

Day 3: Day trip and a farewell dinner

Pick one excursion from our day trips from Cali:

  • Pance for a half-day by the river, then lunch and back by 3pm.
  • Buga for the basilica and a relaxed lunch.
  • Farallones for cloud-forest birding if you want nature.
  • Lago Calima if wind sports are your thing.

Return by late afternoon, rest and finish with a farewell dinner in Granada. If you still have energy, one last dance session.

Budget snapshot (per person per day, as of 2026)

StyleApproximate cost
Budget (hostel, street food, buses and ride apps)COP 150,000-250,000
Mid-range (hotel share, restaurants, classes)COP 350,000-550,000
Comfortable (upscale hotel, tasting menus, private tours)COP 700,000+

Eating your way through the three days

Cali’s food is regional Valle del Cauca cooking rather than the Caribbean or Andean menus you meet elsewhere. Across three days, aim to try sancocho de gallina (a slow chicken stew), arroz atollado (a wet rice dish), empanadas de pipiΓ‘n and chuzos from street stalls, and finish with a cold lulada, the lulo-and-lime drink sold across the city. Breakfast is usually eggs, arepa and hot chocolate with cheese. Lunch is where CaleΓ±os eat their heaviest meal, so look for a set-menu corrientazo at COP 15,000 to 25,000 as of 2026 and save restaurant dinners for the evening.

Getting around for three days

Ride apps are the simplest way to link neighbourhoods, and most trips inside the central districts cost approximately COP 8,000 to 20,000 as of 2026. The MIO bus is workable for daytime trips on main corridors but is slow when you are on a tight schedule. Walking works inside San Antonio and Granada but not between them after dark. If you plan a day trip, a driver for the day is often cheaper than it sounds when split between two or three people.

If it rains

Cali’s rain usually arrives as a short afternoon storm. Swap the outdoor stops for indoor ones: the zoo has covered areas, Museo La Tertulia is indoors, and a salsa class is rain-proof. Move Cristo Rey to the clearest morning you have, because cloud can hide the view completely.

Who this itinerary suits

This plan works for couples, solo travellers and friends who want food, culture and dancing in equal parts. Families can drop the second salsa night and add Pance. Travellers focused only on dancing can double up the lessons and move the zoo to a quieter slot. If your trip is built around the festival, read the Feria de Cali guide first, because the schedule is dictated by event dates.

Variations

  • Four days: add a second salsa night or a full Buga and Calima day.
  • Festival trip: build the schedule around the Feria de Cali.
  • Part of a bigger loop: Cali fits well into Colombia circuits; see our 14-day Colombia itinerary, which includes Cali.

Plan your hotel and activities early, especially in high season, and enjoy the dance floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is three days enough for Cali?
Yes. Three days covers San Antonio, Cristo Rey, the zoo, a salsa class, two or three Granada restaurants, one salsa night and one day trip. A fourth day is useful if you want a second night of dancing or a longer excursion.
Where should I stay for a 3 day Cali trip?
San Antonio suits travellers who want atmosphere and walkability, Granada suits food lovers, and the Chipichape area in the north suits those who want a hotel with a pool. All are reachable by ride app.
How much does a Cali trip cost per day?
As of 2026 a comfortable mid-range day costs roughly COP 350,000 to 550,000 per person including a mid-range room share, meals, local transport, a class and entries. Budget travellers can manage on roughly COP 150,000 to 250,000 in a hostel.
Should I do the salsa lesson before or after the clubs?
Before. Taking a class on day one gives you the basic Cali step and the vocabulary to enjoy the clubs on night two or three.
