Popayán is called the Ciudad Blanca - the White City. The name comes from the uniform whitewashed exteriors of its colonial buildings, a tradition that gives the historic centre a coherent visual identity unlike any other Colombian city. Walk the streets at dusk, when the white buildings catch the last light and the domes of a dozen churches glow against the Andes backdrop, and the nickname makes immediate sense.
The city sits at 1,700 metres above sea level in the Cauca department, two hours south of Cali. Year-round, it is quiet, safe, and undervisited relative to its architectural richness. During Semana Santa - Holy Week, which falls in March or April depending on the year - it transforms into one of the most intensely attended festival events in Latin America. The UNESCO-designated processions, running nightly through the candlelit colonial streets, draw visitors from across Colombia, South America, and internationally.
Popayán’s hotel inventory is small. The most desirable properties are in or immediately adjacent to the centro histórico. Semana Santa demand is concentrated into fewer than ten nights, and the best rooms sell out months in advance.
The Historic Centre: Procession-Route Accommodation
The centro histórico of Popayán is compact - roughly 8 by 6 blocks around Parque Caldas. Nearly all the Semana Santa procession routes move through this area. Staying here means walking to every event, returning for rest between processions, and experiencing the atmosphere of the festival without transport logistics.
Hotel Dann Monasterio (Calle 4 No. 10-14) is the most distinctive hotel in Popayán and one of the most unusual in Colombia. Built inside a Franciscan convent dating to 1570, the hotel preserves the original colonial galleries, stone courtyards, and carved wooden ceilings while adding modern comforts: an outdoor swimming pool, full restaurant, bar, and free buffet breakfast. Guest rating of 8.9 from 903 reviews reflects consistent quality. Standard rates run approximately USD 80 to 130 per night as of 2026, rising to USD 130 to 200 during Semana Santa. It is located on the edge of the Parque Caldas area, within walking distance of the main procession routes. This is the first property to sell out for Holy Week.
Hotel La Plazuela (Calle 5 No. 8-13, 100 metres from Parque Caldas) is the second-best-reviewed property in the city, rated 9.3 from 1,042 reviews. Two interior colonial courtyards, king beds, and a location that cannot be bettered for Semana Santa proximity. Guests consistently mention the historical detail, the comfortable rooms, and the personal service. Standard rates from approximately USD 48 to 80 per night as of 2026 - this represents significantly better value per night than the Dann Monasterio, though with fewer facilities (no pool). The La Plazuela should be the first choice for travellers who prioritise location, history, and guest-rated quality over resort-style amenities.
Boutique Properties: Best Character-to-Price Ratio
CASA LOMA HOTEL BOUTIQUE & TERRAZA GASTRO offers a different kind of Popayán experience - a five-star boutique with a terrace gastro-restaurant, garden, bar, and views over the city. Rated 8.3 from 244 reviews, with particularly strong scores for the food and rooftop setting. The gastro-terrace concept sets it apart from other options: if you want excellent meals with a view as part of your base, this is the choice. Rates from approximately USD 70 to 120 per night as of 2026.
Hotel Encanto is a four-star option with a restaurant, bar, and a guest rating of 8.5. Guests note the comfortable rooms, reliable Wi-Fi, and central location with easy access to the main plaza. Standard rates from approximately USD 45 to 75 per night as of 2026. For visitors who want solid four-star facilities without boutique pricing, Encanto is consistent.
Mid-Range and Budget Picks
Hotel y Restaurante Colonial Popayan is a three-star property with a garden, shared lounge, and free Wi-Fi from approximately USD 35 to 60 per night as of 2026. The restaurant on-site serves Colombian dishes and is well-regarded by guests. A reliable mid-range option in the historic zone.
Hotel San Martin Popayan is located 1.4 miles from the town centre and operates at the top of the budget tier, with both indoor and outdoor swimming pools - unusual at this price point. From approximately USD 25 to 45 per night as of 2026. The pool facilities and the price make this a good choice for families or longer-stay visitors who prioritise amenities over centre proximity.
Semana Santa Booking Strategy
Popayán’s Semana Santa has a specific booking challenge: all the best rooms concentrate into a city of approximately 350,000 people, during a festival that draws tens of thousands of additional visitors over 8 days. Unlike Manizales (Feria de Manizales) or Pasto (Carnaval), Popayán receives significant international religious tourism alongside Colombian domestic visitors.
The procession structure:
| Night | Procession |
|---|---|
| Palm Sunday | Opening procession |
| Holy Monday | Paso de la Dolorosa |
| Holy Tuesday | Paso del Nazareno |
| Holy Wednesday | Paso de la Verónica |
| Maundy Thursday | Paso del Santo Entierro (most attended) |
| Good Friday | Paso de la Resurrección |
| Holy Saturday | Closing events |
Good Friday (Viernes Santo) and Maundy Thursday (Jueves Santo) are the two peak nights. The historical procession on Maundy Thursday evening is widely considered the most powerful and attracts the largest crowds. If you are coming for one night, it is that one.
Booking guidance:
- December is the last realistic window for Dann Monasterio and La Plazuela for Holy Week
- January through February can still yield mid-range availability
- March arrivals looking for Holy Week will face full occupancy at the best properties
- Outside Holy Week, Popayán has good availability year-round - it is not a heavily touristy city in the off-season

Popayán Beyond Semana Santa
The city is worth visiting outside of Holy Week for its colonial architecture, the Museo de Arte Religioso, the covered market, and day trips into the Puracé National Park (home to an active volcano and cloud forest 30 kilometres east of the city). The Puracé National Park thermal pools and the Cascada del Bedón waterfall are half-day trips manageable from any central hotel.
Popayán also has a notable gastronomy festival (Festival Gastrónomico de Popayán, held in September) which has been recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage. Accommodation during this secondary festival is much easier to find than during Semana Santa.
Getting around: The centro histórico is entirely walkable. For trips to Puracé or further afield, shared taxis (collectivos) depart from the bus terminal on Transversal 9. The Popayán bus terminal connects to Cali (2 hours), Bogotá (12+ hours overnight), and Pasto (5 hours southward).
