San Gil is primarily a place to do things, not to be in. The town is the base rather than the destination - a well-connected market town with working infrastructure, reliable transport, and a concentration of adventure operators along its main streets. Good accommodation here means practical: close to operators, easy to get an early bus out, and comfortable enough to recover from a hard day on the river.
The range runs from adventure hostels aimed at backpackers to mid-range hotels that suit travellers who want a private room and air conditioning after a full day in the canyon.
Budget Hostels
San Gil has a well-developed hostel scene largely built around the adventure tourism economy. The best budget properties are central, well-organised, and have direct relationships with the main activity operators.
Macondo Hostel is one of the most consistently recommended hostels in San Gil - a social property with dorm beds, private rooms, a small pool, and a tour desk that books rafting, caving, and paragliding directly. Dorm beds from approximately COP 35,000 to 55,000 per night; private rooms from approximately COP 120,000 as of 2026. The rooftop terrace is the main gathering point for trip planning and post-adventure decompression.
Samβs VIP Hostel is a long-running San Gil budget property with a slightly older feel but reliable fundamentals: central location, good hot showers after cold river days, and a knowledgeable owner who can advise on activity booking. Dorms from approximately COP 35,000; private rooms from approximately COP 110,000 as of 2026. A sociable atmosphere but quieter than Macondo.
El Mochilero Hostel attracts a younger crowd with a focus on adventure activities. The property runs a basic breakfast and has relationships with the main adventure operators for group bookings. Dorms from approximately COP 30,000; private rooms from approximately COP 95,000.
Mid-Range Hotels
San Gilβs mid-range hotel scene is compact but functional. Properties in this bracket offer private rooms with reliable air conditioning, private bathrooms, and generally more sleep-friendly conditions than the social hostels.
Hotel Boutique La Posada de Sam is a well-regarded mid-range property with comfortable rooms, a small courtyard, and a good central location. Rates from approximately COP 160,000 to 280,000 per night for a double room as of 2026. The rooms are larger than most budget properties and the service more attentive - a reasonable step-up from hostel accommodation without reaching boutique hotel prices.
Hotel Santander Plaza is a conventional mid-range hotel on or near the main plaza with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and a simple breakfast included in some rate categories. Rooms from approximately COP 180,000 to 300,000. A practical choice for travellers who value proximity to the town centre and a reliable room standard. Less atmosphere than the hostels but better for light sleepers.
Hotel Panorama sits slightly above town with views across the Fonce valley. More removed from the central activity but quieter and with a pool - better for travellers who want to decompress between adventure days rather than be in the middle of a social hostel atmosphere. Rooms from approximately COP 200,000 to 350,000 as of 2026.
Upper-Range Options
San Gil doesnβt have traditional luxury hotels, but a few properties offer elevated standards relative to the local market:
Hostal Wassermann is a family-run property set in a colonial house with well-maintained rooms and a garden. It sits slightly above the standard hostel offering without reaching boutique hotel prices - individual rooms, a personal atmosphere, and a quieter setting than the main hostel strip. Rates from approximately COP 200,000 to 350,000 for a double.
Finca Las Palmas is a farmstay property outside town with a pool, hammock areas, and a countryside setting. Better for travellers who want to sleep in tranquillity after active days; transport to town requires a mototaxi or taxi (approximately COP 8,000 to 15,000 each way). Rates from approximately COP 250,000 to 400,000 per night.
Practical Notes
Book early for weekends: San Gil fills significantly on Friday and Saturday nights when domestic Colombian travellers arrive for adventure weekends. The best hostel dorms and mid-range rooms book out by Wednesday for the following weekend in high season (December, July). Midweek availability is generally good.
What to bring: Dry bag for rafting (rentable from operators but your own is more convenient), a waterproof phone case, river sandals that can be soaked. Several days of activity mean significant laundry - check whether your accommodation offers a laundry service or has a sink for hand-washing.
Getting to San Gil: Buses from Bogotaβs Terminal del Norte take approximately 5 to 6 hours and cost COP 50,000 to 70,000 depending on the operator. Berlinas del Fonce and Copetran are the main reliable services. From Bucaramanga it is approximately 2 hours by bus, COP 20,000 to 30,000. San Gilβs bus terminal is a short taxi or mototaxi ride from the town centre (COP 5,000 to 8,000).
Barichara overnight: If you plan to spend a night in Barichara during your Santander visit, San Gil makes the most logical base for the first one to two nights before moving on. The Barichara accommodation scene has fewer options in the budget bracket but considerably more character.
