Rock al Parque is the largest free rock festival in Latin America and one of the most significant in the world by attendance. Held in Bogota’s Simon Bolivar Metropolitan Park, it draws around 300,000 visitors across three days of performances spread across multiple stages, covering rock, metal, punk, alternative, and electronic music from Colombian and international artists.

Background

The festival was founded in 1995 by the Bogota District Institute of Arts (IDARTES) as part of an initiative to make high-quality live music accessible to the city’s entire population. Entry has been free since its inception. The first edition featured a handful of local bands; today it attracts headline acts from across Latin America, North America, Europe, and beyond. Past international headliners have included Sepultura, Molotov, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and Skindred, alongside dozens of Colombian rock and metal bands who use the festival as a major national platform.

The free model is deliberately political: the festival asserts that quality music and cultural life are not commercial privileges but public goods. The result is a genuinely cross-class, cross-generational audience that makes Rock al Parque feel different from ticketed festival equivalents.

Programme and stages

The 2026 edition runs Saturday 10 to Monday 12 October. Three stages typically operate simultaneously: the main stage (escenario principal) handles the largest acts and evening headliners; two secondary stages run afternoon and early evening sets by newer Colombian bands and international support acts. The full lineup is usually announced from August onwards via the official website and social media channels.

Programming spans the breadth of rock and metal subgenres — thrash, doom, ska, hardcore, progressive rock, and indie all appear across the three days. The festival has historically allocated around 30 to 40 percent of stage slots to Colombian artists.

Getting there

Parque Simon Bolivar sits in the Teusaquillo district of Bogota. The nearest TransMilenio stations are Ricaurte and Avenida 68; the walk from either to the main park entrance takes around 10 to 15 minutes. During the festival, the TransMilenio system operates extended hours and increased frequency on the relevant corridors. Taxis and app-based services also serve the park readily.

What to expect

The park is large enough to absorb 300,000 people without feeling impossibly cramped, but popular main-stage areas fill quickly for evening headliners. Arrive at least an hour before any act you particularly want to see from a good position. Food and drink vendors operate throughout the park, and bring-your-own food and non-alcoholic drinks are generally permitted (check the official rules each year as they can change).

October in Bogota falls in the second rainy season. Afternoon and evening showers are possible — a waterproof poncho or jacket is advisable. Temperatures during the day reach around 15 to 18 degrees Celsius, dropping to 10 degrees or below in the evening. Layers are essential for the overnight sets.
