Visiting Colombia in October

Wax palms on a misty green hillside in Colombia's Cocora Valley during the rainy season

October is statistically Colombia’s wettest month. Rainfall across the Andean interior - Bogota, Medellin, the coffee region, Cali - peaks between October and early November. That’s the honest picture. But October is also when Colombia is cheapest, least crowded, and when the Pacific coast delivers its final excellent weeks of whale watching before the season ends.

If you frame October correctly - as a month for cities, Caribbean coast, and good deals rather than high-altitude trekking - it’s a perfectly workable time to travel.

October stands out because rain can arrive any time of day rather than staying neatly in the afternoon. Bogota in particular can have overcast, rainy days from morning. The silver lining: no day in Bogota at 2,600 metres altitude is ever “hot,” so indoor activities (Gold Museum, Botero Museum, La Candelaria walking) are comfortable year-round.

What’s Happening in October

Last Weeks of Pacific Whale Season

Humpback whales begin moving south in October, but good sightings continue through most of the month. If you’re choosing between September and October for whale watching from Nuqui or Bahia Malaga, September is more reliable. October is still worthwhile but operators note sightings become less frequent after mid-October.

Day tours from Nuqui run approximately COP 120,000-170,000 per person as of 2026. The ecolodge at El Almejal remains the main accommodation base in Nuqui, with packages from approximately COP 550,000-800,000 per person for 3 nights.

Desfile de Silleteros Preparations

The coffee region towns begin preparing for the Feria de Manizales (which runs in January) and other regional festivals in the months preceding. October is quiet for major events in most cities. Check local listings in Bogota for Jazz al Parque (festival dates vary annually) and other smaller urban events.

Medellin Design Week (October - dates vary)

Medellin hosts design and innovation events in October most years. In 2026, events are expected around the Ruta N innovation district in the north of the city and in El Centro. Most events are free or low-cost.

Best Places to Visit in October

Bogota for Museums and Food

October in Bogota is made for indoor exploration. The Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) on Carrera 6 charges approximately COP 5,000 for foreigners and is one of the finest archaeological museums in South America - allow 2-3 hours. The Botero Museum near Plaza Bolivar is free and houses the largest collection of Fernando Botero’s work in the world.

For food in October, the La Macarena neighbourhood around Calle 26 has concentrated some of Bogota’s most interesting restaurants:

  • Leo Cocina y Cava, Calle 27B No. 8-09 - Colombia’s most decorated restaurant, tasting menus from approximately COP 380,000 per person as of 2026; book 2-3 weeks ahead
  • Prudencia, Calle 69A No. 5-35 - Andean cuisine, approximately COP 60,000-100,000 per person
  • El Cielo, by Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos - modern Colombian tasting menus from approximately COP 280,000

Cartagena and the Caribbean

October is one of the drier months on the Caribbean coast relative to the rest of Colombia. Cartagena receives roughly 200mm of rain in October - less than the 400-500mm hitting Bogota or Cali. Humidity is high but manageable. The old walled city, the Rosario Islands boat tours, and Bocagrande beach all function normally.

Boat tours to Islas del Rosario: approximately COP 60,000-90,000 per person for day trips departing from Muelle de los Pegasos at 8am. Book the previous evening.

Stay in Cartagena: Hotel Quadrifolio, Centro Historico (doubles from approximately COP 450,000/night); Hotel Scion, Bocagrande (from approximately COP 200,000/night).

Eat in Cartagena:

  • Alma, Hotel Casa San Agustin - Colombian coastal cuisine, approximately COP 80,000-130,000 per person
  • La Mulata, Calle del Guerrero - local Caribbean food at local prices, approximately COP 25,000-40,000 per person

Santa Marta

Santa Marta is the best value Caribbean base in October. The beachside Rodadero district and El Rodadero beach function normally. Tayrona National Park entry: approximately COP 59,000 foreigners / COP 37,000 nationals as of 2026. October is off-peak so permits are easy to get - the park requires advance reservation online during December-January peak.

Stay in Santa Marta: The Dreamer Hostel (doubles from approximately COP 150,000, dorms from COP 50,000); Hotel La Perla del Caribe (from approximately COP 180,000/night).

Medellin for Urban Exploration

Medellin in October is wet but the infrastructure holds up well. The Metro and Metrocable to Comunas nororiental function regardless of weather. Commune 13 - reached by Escaleras Electricas from Estadio Metro station - is best visited in the morning. Entry is free; guided tours in English cost approximately COP 60,000-100,000 and leave from outside the Biblioteca Publica San Javier.

El Poblado neighbourhood concentrates most international restaurants and nightlife. Parque del Poblado is the meeting point. Afternoon rain usually subsides by evening, making October evenings in El Poblado workable.

Stay in Medellin: Hotel Patio del Mundo, El Poblado (from approximately COP 150,000/night); The Charlee Hotel (from approximately COP 380,000/night). Hostels in Laureles from approximately COP 40,000-60,000 dorm.

Eat in Medellin:

  • Carmen, El Poblado - one of Medellin’s best restaurants, approximately COP 120,000-180,000 per person
  • Mondongos, multiple locations - bandeja paisa and traditional Antioqueno food, approximately COP 25,000-45,000

What to Skip in October

High-altitude trekking: El Cocuy, Los Nevados, and the Serrania de Chiribiquete all suffer in October. Trails are at their wettest, landslides are more common on mountain roads, and views are obscured by cloud most of the time. Save these for December-February.

Coffee region walks: Salento and Filandia are charming but the Cocora Valley hike becomes muddy and can be partly closed after heavy rain. If you go, waterproof boots and layers are non-negotiable.

Pacific coast if whale watching is your main goal: The season is winding down. September or even late August gives a much better chance of sightings.

Packing List for October in Colombia

Core items:

  • Waterproof jacket (essential - not a lightweight shell but a proper rain layer)
  • Waterproof day bag or dry bag liner
  • Quick-dry shirts and trousers
  • Waterproof walking shoes or boots for cities (Bogota streets flood)
  • Layers for Bogota - even 17C feels cold in persistent rain

For Caribbean coast:

  • Sunscreen SPF50 - humidity is high and UV index remains strong
  • Light linen or quick-dry clothes (cotton will feel suffocating)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen for Rosario Islands snorkelling

Leave behind:

  • Expensive camera gear without weather sealing
  • White or light-coloured canvas shoes (they won’t survive a Bogota October)

Budget Expectations

October is Colombia’s lowest season outside of May. Hotel rates are typically 25-40% below peak season prices. Hostels that charge COP 80,000/night in December often drop to COP 45,000-55,000. For mid-range budgets, COP 250,000-400,000 per day covers accommodation, food, and transport comfortably in most cities.

Airfare: October flights from North America and Europe to Bogota and Cartagena are typically cheaper than peak months. Watch for prices to rise again from late November as the December holiday season approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is October the worst month to visit Colombia? For high-altitude trekking and the coffee region, yes - it is statistically the wettest. For Caribbean coast visits, Bogota urban tourism, and budget-focused travel, October works well. The country doesn’t shut down in the rain.

How bad is the flooding in October? Bogota’s El Centro and certain low-lying neighbourhoods do experience flooding after heavy rain. La Candelaria streets near Carrera 7 can have significant standing water. The situation rarely prevents movement around the city but is inconvenient. Stay on the Metro system (which runs elevated through most of the city) when possible after heavy rain.

Should I visit Colombia in October or wait until December? If price is the main factor, October. If weather and comfort are priorities, wait for December when the dry season returns to the Andes. December is also Colombia’s holiday month with Cartagena’s Fiestas de Independencia and Christmas lights in Medellin - worth the extra cost for many travellers.

October is Colombia’s lowest-cost month for touring. Tours in Bogota and tours in Medellin offer better availability and sometimes lower group prices outside peak season.
