The airport arrival is the most stressful moment of any Colombia trip for first-time visitors. You are tired, possibly disoriented by altitude if landing in Bogota, and facing an unfamiliar city. Getting the transfer right is worth thinking about before you land.

El Dorado Airport to Bogota City

Bogota Arrival - What to Expect

El Dorado International Airport (BOG) has two terminals: Terminal 1 handles most international arrivals and Terminal 2 handles domestic flights. After clearing immigration and customs, you enter the main arrivals hall. Ignore anyone approaching you in the terminal offering transport - use only official options.

Official Taxi (Taxi Ejecutivo)

The safest street-level option is the official taxi counter (marcado taxi) inside the arrivals hall. A booth operator prints a fare receipt based on your destination zone before you get in the car. Hand the receipt to the driver - this is your agreed price.

Zone prices (as of 2026, approximate):

  • La Candelaria / historic centre: COP 50,000-60,000
  • Chapinero / Zona Rosa: COP 60,000-70,000
  • Usaquen / north Bogota: COP 70,000-85,000

Journey time: 35-60 minutes depending on traffic. Rush hours (7-9am, 5-8pm) can add 30-40 minutes.

Ride-Hailing Apps

InDriver and Cabify both operate from El Dorado. Open the app in the arrivals hall, request a ride, and wait outside at the designated pick-up point. Prices are generally comparable to official taxis but you can see the route and driver details in advance.

Pre-Booked Transfer

A pre-booked Bogota airport transfer eliminates all uncertainty. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, the price is fixed in advance, and you deal with no negotiation after a long-haul flight. This is particularly useful if arriving late at night or if your Spanish is limited.

Medellin Airport Transfers

Medellin - The Airport Distance Problem

Jose Maria Cordova Airport (MDE) is not in Medellin. It sits in Rionegro, a separate municipality about 35km from El Poblado on a winding mountain road. Factor at least 45-60 minutes in normal traffic and up to 90 minutes during peak periods.

Official Taxi

Taxis from the airport taxi counter in arrivals cost approximately COP 80,000-100,000 to El Poblado (as of 2026). To Laureles or Estadio, add approximately COP 15,000-20,000. The taxi counter is inside the terminal.

Shared Shuttle (Bus Intermunic)

Shared minibuses (known locally as “busetas del aeropuerto”) wait outside arrivals and make multiple stops in Medellin including the Centro bus terminal. Cost is approximately COP 15,000-25,000 per person (as of 2026). Journey takes 60-90 minutes with stops. Good budget option but less practical with luggage late at night.

Pre-Booked Transfer

A pre-booked Medellin airport transfer is worth considering if arriving after dark or on a tight connection. Drivers monitor flight arrivals and adjust for delays. Fixed price agreed in advance.

Cartagena Airport Transfers

Rafael Nunez Airport (CTG)

Cartagena’s airport is conveniently close to the city - approximately 10-15 minutes from the walled city (Ciudad Amurallada) by taxi. This makes transfers more straightforward than in Bogota or Medellin.

Taxi from Airport

Official taxis from the authorised counter in arrivals cost approximately COP 20,000-35,000 to the walled city or Bocagrande (as of 2026). The InDriver app also operates in Cartagena if you prefer to book digitally.

Pre-Booked Transfer

A pre-booked Cartagena transfer is less essential than in Bogota given the short distance, but still worth considering for late arrivals or if you are travelling with family and luggage.

Cali Airport Transfers

Alfonso Bonilla Aragon Airport (CLO) sits approximately 20km northeast of Cali city centre. Journey time to the tourist districts of El Pedregal or Granada is approximately 25-40 minutes.

Official taxis from the airport counter cost approximately COP 35,000-55,000 (as of 2026). The MIO bus system has a route connecting the airport to the city centre for approximately COP 2,800 but requires a reloadable Mio card.

Tips for All Colombia Airport Arrivals

Never accept rides from strangers in the terminal. This applies to all Colombian airports but is especially important in Bogota. The “paseo millonario” scam (where an unofficial taxi driver forces you to withdraw cash from ATMs before releasing you) is a real risk in Bogota. Stick to official taxis or apps only.

Have Colombian pesos ready. Most airport taxis are cash-only. Exchange currency or withdraw from the airport ATM before leaving the terminal.

Keep small bills. Taxi drivers in Colombia often claim not to have change for large bills. Carrying COP 50,000 notes or smaller avoids this situation.

Book transfers for night arrivals. Landing at midnight and navigating an unfamiliar city for transportation is stressful. Pre-booking means someone is waiting for you regardless of the hour.

Factor in Bogota traffic. El Dorado airport sits on the western edge of the city and most accommodation is in the north or centre. The Autopista Sur and Calle 26 can be heavily congested during peak hours. If your flight lands at 5-7pm, add 30-45 minutes to estimated transfer times.
