Manizales in January is festival season. The Feria Internacional de Manizales - one of Colombia’s oldest and most distinctive urban celebrations - fills the city for the first two weeks of the month with folklore parades, nightly concerts, the Reinado Internacional del Café pageant, and the controversial corrida season at the Plaza de Toros El Santuario. The city sits at 2,150 metres above sea level in the Eje Cafetero, meaning January nights are cool (12–14°C), the streets rise and fall steeply, and the accommodation market is entirely different from the other eleven months of the year.
Choosing where to stay in Manizales has more consequence than it does in flat, grid-pattern cities. Hills mean taxis for most inter-neighbourhood movement. Festival proximity has real value. And booking early is not optional.
How Manizales Is Structured for Visitors
Manizales runs along a mountain ridge. The historic centre - Parque Caldas, the Cathedral Basilica, and the main civic grid - sits at the ridge crest. From there, the city descends north toward the cable car (teleférico) terminal at Cable Plaza, and south toward Avenida Santander and the university districts.
The main festival venues cluster around three points: Parque Caldas (free concerts, Desfile de Mitos y Leyendas parade), Teatro Los Fundadores (ticketed folklore and cultural shows), and Plaza de Toros El Santuario (corrida season), all within roughly 2 kilometres of each other. The cable car station at Cable Plaza anchors the northern end of the city’s most active commercial and restaurant zone.
Taxis and InDriver handle the gradients without difficulty. Parking is effectively impossible during the main festival days - if you are arriving by car, park it at your hotel and use taxis for the festival.
Centro Historico and Carrera 23: Festival-First Location
The area immediately around Parque Caldas and the Carrera 23 corridor is where you feel the Feria most directly. The main parade route for the Desfile de Mitos y Leyendas runs along Carrera 23. Free concerts in Parque Caldas run nightly. The Teatro Los Fundadores - venue for the higher-production folklore shows - is within walking distance.
The trade-off is that this area is noisiest during the festival: street celebrations continue late, the route around Parque Caldas gets dense during peak events, and the accommodation options lean toward functional business hotels rather than boutique stays.
Hotel Carretero is the most substantial mid-range option in central Manizales - a large full-service hotel with restaurant, gym, and rooms at approximately USD 40–65 per night (standard rates as of 2026). During Feria, expect rates to rise to USD 70–100. With 953 reviews and a guest rating of 8.7, it is one of the most consistently booked hotels in the city. Its location on the main Carrera puts you within a 10-minute walk of the main parade route. A reliable, if unremarkable, choice for festival visitors who prioritise proximity and convenience over character.
Europa Hotel Boutique (Calle 10 No 24-79) is a well-regarded small hotel five minutes’ walk from the historic centre, with modern rooms, mini-bar, and a 9.1 guest rating from 387 reviews. From approximately USD 40–60 per night standard rates as of 2026. The location is slightly quieter than the main parade corridor - you are close enough to walk to events but not directly on the route. Book Europa Hotel Boutique on Booking.com.
Cable Plaza Area: Best Quality, Teleférico Access
The Cable Plaza neighbourhood, anchored by the upper terminal of Manizales’ iconic teleférico, has the strongest concentration of mid-range and upmarket hotels in the city. It is quieter than the centro during festival peak hours, slightly further from the main parade routes (15–20 minutes by taxi or the cable car), and considerably more comfortable as a base for the full two-week festival period.
The teleférico connects Cable Plaza to the lower city near the bus terminal in around 12 minutes, with good views over the Andes. Cable fare is approximately COP 4,000–6,000 as of 2026. During festival peak days, the cable car itself becomes a crowd point - plan accordingly.
Quo Quality Hotel (Calle 66A No 26A-28) is Manizales’ best full-service hotel and the natural choice for visitors who want genuine comfort. A rooftop spa, sauna, fitness centre, bar, and restaurant occupy the upper floors, with rooms rated 9.6 for cleanliness and 9.3 for facilities across 888 reviews. The iPads in each room and the hot tub suites push it toward the top of the Eje Cafetero hotel market. Standard rates run approximately USD 90–130 per night as of 2026; expect USD 140–180 during Feria peak days. It is near the Torre de El Cable and the Palogrande Stadium, making it genuinely useful for bullfighting corrida season attendees as well as general festival visitors. Book well in advance - Quo fills fast for January.
Hotel Piedras De Manà offers a calmer, more personal alternative in the Cable Plaza area. Rated 9.5 Exceptional from 209 reviews, this B&B-style property has a restaurant, terrace, and free American breakfast included daily. Rooms from approximately USD 38–55 per night standard rates as of 2026. The smaller scale (fewer rooms than the Carretero or Quo) means it sells out earliest for January - if this is your choice, book by September.
El Cable Neighbourhood: Budget and International Traveller Hostels
El Cable, the zone immediately around and below the cable car station, is where most budget travellers and independent backpackers stay. It has a concentration of hostels, cafés, and the kind of street life that exists for residents rather than tourists. International travellers who combine Manizales with a wider Eje Cafetero trip - Salento, Pereira, Hacienda Venecia - typically route through here.
Hostal Mirador Andino (Carrera 23 32-20) is the consistently recommended option in this tier - a hostel with shared lounge, terrace, communal kitchen, and a location rating of 9.8. It is near the Convention Center Fundadores, which is one of the main auxiliary venues for the Feria. Dorm beds run approximately COP 50,000–80,000 per night; private rooms from approximately USD 25–35 as of 2026. It fills completely for Feria week. Book by November at the latest.
Hotel Casa Galvez offers a step up from hostel without reaching hotel prices - rated 9.3 from recent guests, with airport shuttle service and modern rooms with free Wi-Fi. Approximately 1.6 miles from the city centre. Rates from approximately USD 35–55 per night as of 2026. A good option for those who want a private bathroom and reliable Wi-Fi at budget-to-mid pricing.
Early Booking: Why January Is Different
Manizales has a much smaller hotel inventory than Bogotá, MedellĂn, or Cartagena. The entire city has fewer than forty significant named hotels, and the Cable Plaza and centro clusters hold the majority of internationally bookable inventory.
The Feria de Manizales creates the highest-demand booking period of the Colombian coffee region calendar. In a normal month, Manizales has reasonable last-minute availability. In January:
- The best properties (Quo Quality, Piedras De ManĂ, Hostal Mirador Andino) typically sell out by October–November for peak festival days
- Room rates rise 30–60% across all tiers during the festival period
- Multi-night minimum stays (typically 3 nights) are common during the main festival week
- Midweek availability is generally better than Friday and Saturday nights, when the Desfile de Mitos y Leyendas and main concert nights coincide
If you are travelling from outside Colombia, booking before booking flights is not excessive. Festival dates shift slightly each year - usually the first two weeks of January - so confirm exact dates by November before finalising travel plans.
