Cartagena to Santa Marta is the standard link on the Caribbean coast and the first step toward Tayrona National Park, Minca and the Sierra Nevada. At roughly 250 kilometres, it is a half-day trip with no practical flight option. This guide compares bus, shuttle and private transfer, with the terminal and cost detail that competing pages usually leave out.

The Bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta
Buses are the cheapest way to cover the route. Expreso Brasilia and other coastal operators run regular services from Cartagenaβs Terminal de Transportes, on the eastern edge of the city around 25 to 30 minutes by taxi from the walled centre. Allow COP 20,000 to 30,000 as of 2026 for a taxi, and confirm the fare before you get in.
Many direct services stop at Barranquilla, and some pass through the Cienaga area before reaching Santa Marta. Total journey time is usually 4.5 to 6 hours, longer around Barranquilla at rush hour. Coaches are air-conditioned, sometimes very cold, so bring a jacket. Santa Martaβs bus terminal is on the southern edge of the city, about 15 to 20 minutes from the centre and the beach area of El Rodadero.
The route is short enough that an overnight bus makes no sense. Choose a departure between 6am and 10am to arrive in the afternoon. You can search intercity buses with Omio or buy at the terminal.
Shuttle Vans (Door to Door)
For most travellers, shuttle vans are the best compromise. They collect passengers from hotels in Cartagenaβs old town and Getsemani and drop in Santa Marta or, for extra fee, in Taganga or Rodadero. Journey time is typically 4 to 5 hours, and several operators run daily departures at 6am to 8am. Book at your hotel or a tour desk, a day ahead. Be sure the price includes the drop-off point you want, as Santa Marta is spread out.
Private Transfer
A private car costs from approximately COP 450,000 as of 2026 and takes about 4 hours with a comfort stop. It is the sensible choice for three or four people, for travellers with large luggage, or for anyone heading straight to Minca or Tayrona. If you are landing in Cartagena and continuing the same day, arrange a Cartagena airport transfer for the airport pickup and a separate driver for the long leg. If your journey begins elsewhere, compare flight prices into Cartagena before you book.
What About Flying?
There is no regular direct flight service worth planning around between Cartagena (CTG) and Santa Marta (SMR). Flights usually route through Bogota or Medellin, taking longer than the road and costing considerably more. The exception is when you have an onward international connection from Santa Marta, or a long gap in your itinerary that justifies the cost.
Which Option Should You Choose?
- Shuttle van for most travellers: door to door, no terminal trips, 4 to 5 hours.
- Bus if you are watching your budget and do not mind a taxi at each terminal.
- Private transfer for groups and families, or if you are heading straight to Minca.
- Flight only for a specific onward connection.
