The terrain around Popayán is among the most varied in Colombia — active volcanoes, hot springs, high-altitude páramo, indigenous communities maintaining traditional culture, and a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site within a day’s reach. The city is a good base for Cauca department more broadly, and each of the following destinations shows a distinctly different face of the region.
Puracé National Natural Park and Volcano
Puracé (4,646m) is an active stratovolcano 44km southeast of Popayán and the centrepiece of the Puracé National Natural Park — 83,000 hectares of páramo, cloud forest, and Andean wetlands. The park is one of the primary headwaters of the Amazon river system.
Hiking to the crater rim involves a 4 to 5 hour round trip from the park entrance (3,000m elevation) through páramo terrain. The trail is clear but steep, and altitude affects visitors who have been based at lower elevations. Proper waterproof gear and warm layers are essential — temperature at the crater area drops well below 10°C even in clear weather, and clouds move in rapidly.
Park entry: Approximately COP 50,000 per adult (as of 2026). A guide is required for crater access and can be hired at the park entrance for approximately COP 80,000 to 120,000 for a half-day.
Transport from Popayán: Buses toward La Plata pass through the Puracé area. Alternatively, shared jeeps from Popayán’s terminal on Transversal 9 run toward Puracé and cost approximately COP 20,000 per person. A private vehicle and driver costs approximately COP 150,000 to 200,000 return including waiting time. The park entrance is 44km from Popayán; journey approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
Timing: Check crater access conditions before travelling. Morning departures give the best chance of clear skies. The park is less crowded Monday to Wednesday.
Coconuco Hot Springs
The Aguas Termales de Coconuco sit at approximately 2,600m elevation, 44km from Popayán on the same road that leads to Puracé. The springs include two commercial complexes (Aguas Hirviendo — Boiling Waters — and Aguas Tibias — Warm Waters) with different temperature pools ranging from 25°C to near-boiling.
Aguas Hirviendo reaches 80°C at source and is channelled into bathing pools at approximately 40–45°C. Entry approximately COP 15,000 per adult. Open daily 8am to 5pm. The setting in open páramo with views of the surrounding mountains is particularly good on clear days.
Aguas Tibias has cooler, more comfortable pools at 36–38°C, plus a waterslide section that makes it more family-oriented. Entry approximately COP 18,000.
Transport: The same buses heading toward Puracé pass through Coconuco. Ask the driver to stop at Aguas Hirviendo or Aguas Tibias. Buses from Popayán (Terminal de Transportes) every 45 minutes, approximately COP 12,000 and 1 hour journey.
Combined day: Visiting the hot springs in the morning and the Puracé park entrance in the afternoon works well, or reverse the order if doing the full crater hike.
Silvia — Indigenous Guambiano Market
The market in Silvia (65km northwest of Popayán) operates every Tuesday and is one of the most significant indigenous markets in Colombia — the Misak (Guambiano) people of the surrounding resguardos (indigenous territories) descend to town in traditional clothing of blue and purple woollen robes and hats to trade produce, crafts, and livestock.
The market is not staged for tourists — it is a functional weekly trade event for communities in the Guambiano highland territory. The presence of visitors is tolerated and income from craft sales is welcome, but this is not a performance. Photography of people requires their consent — some community members prefer not to be photographed; others are comfortable with it. The craft section (woven bags, belts, jewellery in the Misak pattern tradition) is the best place to purchase ethical, high-quality textiles directly from producers.
Market timing: The market begins around 7am and winds down by noon. Arrive early for the most activity and the best produce selection.
Transport: Shared vans (colectivos) from Popayán’s terminal leave from approximately 6am on Tuesdays for COP 15,000 per person. Journey approximately 1.5 hours. Return transport back to Popayán runs until approximately 3pm. Standard buses for non-market days run less frequently.
Tierradentro UNESCO Archaeological Site
Tierradentro is one of Colombia’s two UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites (the other is San Agustín) and one of the least-visited for its significance. The site consists of approximately 170 underground funerary chambers (hypogea) carved into the hillsides by a pre-Columbian people around 600 to 900 AD. The chambers — some large enough to stand in — are decorated with geometric red, black, and white paintings on the walls and ceilings.
The site covers four hilltop clusters: Alto de Segovia, Alto de San Andrés, Alto del Duende, and Alto de El Aguacate. Each requires a 15 to 40 minute walk from the road. The paintings inside the chambers are remarkable — the colour retention after 1,000-plus years underground is extraordinary — and the combination of the underground architecture with the painted ceilings is unlike anything else in South America.
Entry: Approximately COP 40,000 per adult, valid for both Tierradentro and the associated museum in the nearby village of San Andrés de Pisimbalá. The museum holds associated funerary objects, gold work, and anthropological context. Open Tuesday to Sunday 8am to 4pm.
Transport from Popayán: Complex. The most reliable route is a bus from Popayán to La Plata (3 hours, COP 20,000–25,000), then a chiva (wooden bus) from La Plata to San Andrés de Pisimbalá (2 hours, COP 15,000). Alternatively, a private vehicle and driver from Popayán costs approximately COP 300,000 to 400,000 for the round trip. Recommended: Stay one night in the village to allow a full day at the site.

Lago La Cocha and the Ecuador Border Corridor
South of Popayán toward Pasto, Lago La Cocha is a high-altitude lake at 2,800m near the Ecuador border — shared between Colombia and Ecuador. The lake is technically a 6-hour drive from Popayán (closer to Pasto) and is listed here as an extended overnight trip rather than a day trip.
Popayán to Pasto is a scenic 4-hour bus journey (COP 35,000–45,000) through high Andean terrain. Pasto itself is an undervisited city with its own colonial character and proximity to the Laguna de La Cocha, Volcán Galeras (active, with access restrictions), and the Carnaval de Negros y Blancos in January (UNESCO heritage).
Practical Notes
Best single day trip: Coconuco hot springs for a restorative day, or Silvia market (Tuesdays only) for cultural depth. Combine Puracé and Coconuco on a single day if energy levels allow.
Tierradentro vs San Agustín: Both are UNESCO archaeological sites reachable from the Popayán–Pasto axis. If time allows only one, Tierradentro has more immediate visual impact (the painted underground chambers) and fewer visitors. San Agustín has more extensive statuary and covers a larger area.
Road conditions: The Cauca region has significant road travel times due to winding mountain roads and occasional landslides in the wet season (April–May, October–November). Always check road conditions before long journeys.
