Popayán is a compact city and the historic centre — where most visitors spend their time — is entirely walkable. The colonial grid covers roughly 10 by 10 blocks, and the key sights, restaurants, and the main market are all within a 20-minute walk of Parque Caldas. For the wider city, local buses and taxis cover the gaps efficiently.
Walking the Historic Centre
The best and most practical way to experience Popayán is on foot. The historic district sits on a gentle plateau with no significant hills within the central grid (the El Morro hilltop and the La Ermita church hill are short climbs on the periphery). Cobblestone streets are narrow and well-maintained.
A full circuit of the colonial sights — Parque Caldas, the main churches, the Casa Museo Negret, the Puente del Humilladero — covers approximately 4km at a comfortable pace. The streets are safe during the day and reasonably so on the main lit streets in the evening. Avoid the secondary lanes off the main colonial grid after dark.

Local Buses (SETP)
Popayán’s urban bus system (Sistema Estratégico de Transporte Público or SETP) covers the wider city including residential districts, the bus terminal, and the airport area. The routes are not immediately intuitive for visitors unfamiliar with the city, but the fares are very low (approximately COP 2,300 to 2,800 per trip as of 2026).
For visitors, the most useful routes are:
- Buses marked Centro run along the main Carreras through the historic district
- Buses marked Terminal run from central stops to the main bus station
Bus stops are marked but not always clearly signed. The safest approach for unfamiliar routes is to ask a hotel or hostel to show you the nearest stop for your destination, or use a taxi.
Taxis
Taxis in Popayán operate on meters. The base fare is approximately COP 4,000 and most journeys within the city cost COP 7,000 to 13,000. Taxis are available throughout the day and evening by hailing on the street or calling through hotel reception.

Getting to and from the Bus Terminal
The Terminal de Transportes de Popayán sits on Transversal 9 approximately 1.5km from the historic centre. It is the hub for all regional and national routes.
Key routes and fares from Popayán terminal:
- Popayán to Cali: approximately 3 hours, COP 25,000–35,000. Buses run every 30–45 minutes from 5am to 9pm. Multiple operators including Flota Magdalena and Coomotor.
- Popayán to Bogotá: approximately 10 to 12 hours, COP 70,000–110,000. Overnight buses available. Bogotá is a long journey from Popayán — flying is worth considering.
- Popayán to Pasto: approximately 4 hours, COP 35,000–45,000 through high Andean terrain.
- Popayán to La Plata (for Tierradentro connection): approximately 3 hours, COP 20,000–25,000.
- Popayán to Silvia (Tuesday market): shared vans from the terminal, COP 15,000, 1.5 hours.
Airport
Aeropuerto Guillermo León Valencia (PPN) is located 15 minutes north of the historic centre. Airlines serving Popayán include Avianca (Bogotá, 50 min) and EasyFly (regional connections). The airport is small — arrivals and departures clear within 15 to 20 minutes.
Airport to city: Taxis use a fixed-rate system from the airport — approximately COP 15,000 to 22,000 to the historic centre. Confirm the rate before getting in. No meter is required for airport taxis; the fixed rate is posted at the official taxi stand outside arrivals.
From Bogotá: The 50-minute flight on Avianca is approximately COP 200,000 to 350,000 one way depending on booking date. The 10-hour overnight bus costs COP 70,000 to 110,000 but is tiring. Flying makes sense for visitors whose time is limited.
Getting Around the Wider Cauca Region
For day trips to Puracé, Coconuco, Silvia, and Tierradentro, transport options differ by destination:
Public buses and shared colectivos: Cover Coconuco, Puracé (park entrance road), and Silvia. Depart from the main bus terminal. The cheapest but slowest option. Suitable for single destinations with no time pressure.
Private vehicle hire: The most flexible option for multi-stop days or visits to Tierradentro. Drivers with 4WD vehicles can be hired through hotels or the Popayán tourism office for approximately COP 200,000 to 400,000 per day depending on distance. This is the recommended approach for Tierradentro given the road complexity.
Organised tours: Several Popayán-based operators run day tours to Puracé, Silvia, and combined Coconuco/Puracé days. Prices approximately COP 80,000 to 150,000 per person including transport and guide. Ask at your hotel for recommended operators or contact the tourism office on Parque Caldas.
Practical Notes
Altitude: Popayán at 1,737m is moderate altitude — most people experience no effects, but those arriving from sea level may feel slightly short of breath on the first day. This does not affect walking around the city but is worth noting before attempting the Puracé crater hike (which starts at 3,000m).
Traffic: The city’s narrow colonial streets create significant congestion during the morning (7–9am) and evening (5–7pm) rush hours. Walking or using the bus is more reliable than taxis during these periods within the centre.
Night transport: Taxis are the only reliable option after 10pm. Uber and InDriver have limited coverage at night. Have your hotel reception call a taxi if you need one late.
