December is Colombia’s most popular month to visit and the conditions justify the reputation. The dry season returns to the Andes in late November and is fully established by December, bringing clear skies over Bogota, Medellin, and the coffee region after eight months of rain. The Caribbean coast is at its driest and most accessible. And the country embraces the festive season with an intensity that surprises most visitors: Medellin’s Christmas lights are legitimately one of the most spectacular light displays anywhere in the world.
Plan and book significantly further ahead than any other month. Popular hotels in Cartagena sell out in October for December. Tayrona National Park requires advance permits from the national parks service. Flights to Colombia are at their most expensive.

What’s Happening in December
Alumbrados - Medellin’s Christmas Light Festival (December 1-31)
Medellin’s Christmas lights display - the Alumbrados - runs throughout December along the Medellin River corridor from the city centre northward, along Avenida El Poblado, and in parks across the city. The display is free and genuinely exceptional in scale: hundreds of thousands of LED lights create illuminated arches, animal figures, and geometric tunnels stretching for kilometres. The Botanical Garden hosts a particularly popular installation.
The best evening to see the Alumbrados is weeknights - weekends draw large crowds. The riverfront Parque de las Luces (near the city centre) and the Avenida El Poblado stretch are the two main corridors. No tickets required. Allow 2-3 hours to walk between the main installations.
Fiestas de Independencia - Cartagena (November 11-December)
Cartagena celebrates its Independence Day (November 11) with a festival that spills into December. The city’s Reinado Nacional de Belleza (National Beauty Contest) takes place in mid-November, but related events and street parties continue through December. The Centro Historico and Getsemani fill with music, food stalls, and outdoor performances most evenings.
Feria de Cali (December 25-30)
Cali’s biggest festival runs December 25 through 30 each year without exception. The Feria is the world’s largest salsa festival: six days of concerts, parades, salsotecas, and competitions. Major concerts at the Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero draw international salsa artists. Tickets for headline concerts range from approximately COP 80,000 to COP 350,000 as of 2026. The Chontaduro neighbourhood and Juanchito district are the epicentres of the dancing scene.
Book Cali accommodation at least 6-8 weeks ahead for the Feria days. Prices triple during December 25-30. Even a basic private room that costs COP 120,000 on a regular night reaches COP 350,000+ during the festival.
Bogota’s Christmas Markets and New Year
Bogota’s Parque El Virrey and Usaquen neighbourhood host small Christmas markets in December. The main celebration is New Year’s Eve, when Bogota’s Zona Rosa and Parque 93 host outdoor events and the city sets off fireworks at midnight. Restaurants in Bogota serve special New Year’s Eve menus (precios fijos) from approximately COP 150,000-300,000 per person.
San Andres Island Diving Season
December through April is the best period for diving and snorkelling around San Andres and Providencia islands. Visibility in the sea exceeds 30 metres, the water is calm, and the Blue Hole (Hoyo Soplador) is at its most accessible. Dive packages from local operators on the island cost approximately COP 150,000-250,000 for two tank dives including equipment as of 2026. Book at least 2 weeks ahead for December.

December Travel Logistics
Book everything early: This is not a month to wing it. Flights to Colombia in December cost 40-80% more than October. If you’re flexible, flying in the first two weeks of December is cheaper than flying December 20-January 5.
Tayrona National Park: The park operates a visitor quota system in December and January. The maximum visitor number per day is enforced. Book permits in advance through the Colombia national parks reservation website. Walk-up entry is often impossible on weekends.
New Year’s Eve in coastal cities: Security around Nueva Ano events in Cartagena and Santa Marta has improved significantly in recent years. Use established venues and avoid the beach at midnight (open-air New Year’s celebrations attract opportunistic crime). Official hotel and venue events with perimeter security are a safer option.

Budget Expectations
December is Colombia’s most expensive month. Budget travellers face a genuinely difficult environment - hostels that charge COP 45,000 in October charge COP 70,000-90,000 in December. Hotel prices in Cartagena can increase 200-300% over regular rates.
Realistic December budgets:
- Budget (hostels, street food, local transport): COP 200,000-280,000/day
- Mid-range (private rooms, some restaurants, taxis): COP 600,000-900,000/day
- Cartagena accommodation alone can exceed COP 500,000-900,000/night for mid-range hotels in December
The Feria de Cali days (December 25-30) add a significant premium in Cali specifically.
