- Combining with the Coffee Region
Los Nevados National Natural Park spans the central Andean range between Caldas, Risaralda, Quindio, and Tolima departments, protecting Colombia’s greatest concentration of high-altitude glaciers. The park takes its name from the four nevados (glaciated peaks) within its boundaries: Nevado del Ruiz (5,321m), Nevado de Santa Isabel (4,965m), Nevado del Tolima (5,215m), and Nevado del Quindio (4,750m). It sits in the heart of Colombia’s coffee region and can be combined with visits to Salento, Manizales, or Pereira.
The park is one of Colombia’s most accessible high-altitude environments - you can arrive in Bogota on a Tuesday, take a bus to Manizales, and be at 4,800m above sea level on a Wednesday morning with a day tour operator. That accessibility comes with conditions: Nevado del Ruiz remains an active and frequently elevated-alert volcano that changes park access without notice.
The Key Trekking Routes
El Paramillo de Santa Rosa - Nevado del Ruiz (Main Day Route)
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous Elevation: 3,800m to approximately 4,800m Duration: 4-5 hours up and down from the park entrance Trailhead: Parque Nacional Los Nevados main entrance, El Cisne sector (reached from Manizales)
The primary hiking route in Los Nevados for day visitors accesses the El Paramillo lookout point at approximately 4,800m. The trail crosses paramo before reaching a viewpoint toward the Nevado del Ruiz summit crater and glacier. On clear days, the glacier and fumarolic activity are visible. This is not a glacier summit walk - it’s a high-altitude paramo and volcanic landscape hike with spectacular views when conditions permit.
A 4WD road from the park entrance (3,800m) reaches an intermediate parking area at approximately 4,200m, reducing hiking to 2-3 hours for the upper section. Most day tours use this road, giving the hike a relatively accessible profile.
Nevado de Santa Isabel Summit (Glacier Ascent)
Difficulty: Strenuous to very strenuous (glacier terrain) Elevation: 3,500m to 4,965m summit Duration: 2-day trip from Pereira or Manizales; summit push 6-8 hours Access: Via Termales El Ruiz (Pereira side) or Brisas sector
Nevado de Santa Isabel is the recommended entry point for glacier mountaineering in Los Nevados. The standard route from the Termales sector crosses moraines and boulder fields before gaining the glacier. The final 200 metres of elevation involves walking on snow and ice - crampons and an ice axe are required. The summit view encompasses the coffee region valleys and the other Los Nevados peaks.
This is a proper mountaineering objective requiring glacier experience or a qualified guide with technical equipment. It is not a day hike.
Technical requirements:
- Crampons (rented from operators in Manizales or Pereira)
- Ice axe (rented from operators)
- Helmet
- Harness and rope team if conditions require
Nevado del Tolima Summit (Multi-Day Expedition)
Difficulty: Very strenuous / technical Elevation: 5,215m Duration: 4-5 day round trip from Ibague
The Nevado del Tolima is the most demanding of the Los Nevados summits and the most remote. Access is from Ibague on the eastern side of the range. The approach involves a 2-day walk through cloud forest and paramo to a high camp before a summit push. This is an expedition objective requiring acclimatisation time, technical glacier equipment, and ideally previous high-altitude experience.

Best Season
December to February (primary): The best and most reliable window for clear summit views and stable trail conditions. Daytime temperatures at El Paramillo reach 5-10C. Glacier surfaces are consolidated. December-February is also the peak time for combining Los Nevados with coffee region tourism.
June to early August (secondary): A shorter dry period that is viable for the El Paramillo hike and Santa Isabel summit attempts. June can be variable - July and August tend to be the most reliable secondary season months.
March-May and September-November: Heavy rain season. The El Paramillo hike is technically possible in light rain but views are typically non-existent. Glacier ascents are inadvisable. Volcanic alert levels sometimes rise in the rainy season, causing additional closures.
The Volcanic Hazard Context
Nevado del Ruiz is the deadliest volcano in Colombian history. The 1985 eruption generated a lahar (volcanic mudflow) that destroyed the town of Armero 70km away and killed approximately 23,000 people - one of the worst volcanic disasters of the 20th century. The SGC now operates comprehensive monitoring systems and the park is managed with a clear evacuation protocol.
Visiting the park today during periods of Yellow or lower alert level is considered safe. The hazard is real but managed. What this means practically: park access can be suspended with 24 hours’ notice when alert levels rise. Build flexibility into your travel dates if Los Nevados is a priority. If you arrive and the park is closed, a coffee region day (Cocora Valley, Salento, coffee farms) is an excellent alternative in the same area.
Current alert levels for Nevado del Ruiz are published by the SGC and updated daily. Many operators monitor these levels and will notify clients of changes to planned tours.
Before departing, confirm your travel insurance for Colombia covers trekking above 4,000m — standard policies often exclude high-altitude activities.
Combining with the Coffee Region
Los Nevados sits at the edge of Colombia’s coffee region. Combining the two makes for one of Colombia’s strongest travel itineraries.
Suggested 5-day route:
- Day 1: Fly or bus to Pereira/Armenia; transfer to Salento
- Day 2: Cocora Valley wax palm hike and coffee farm tour near Salento
- Day 3: Drive to Manizales (2 hours via the mountain pass); afternoon in the city
- Day 4: Day tour to Los Nevados El Paramillo sector; return to Manizales
- Day 5: Return to Bogota by bus or fly from Manizales
Transport from Salento to Manizales: approximately 3 hours, approximately COP 25,000-35,000 by shared minibus. Tours in Salento also list Eje Cafetero packages that can incorporate a Los Nevados day from Manizales.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I hike Nevado del Ruiz to the summit?
- The summit crater of Nevado del Ruiz (5,321m) is restricted due to ongoing volcanic activity and requires special permits. The established hiking route goes to El Paramillo del Ruiz lookout at approximately 4,800m, which gives views of the volcanic crater zone. Summit climbing is only possible with authorised operators during periods of low volcanic activity.
- Is Nevado del Ruiz dangerous to visit?
- Nevado del Ruiz is an active volcano monitored continuously by the Servicio Geologico Colombiano. Day hiking to the El Paramillo lookout is considered safe when the volcano is at alert level Yellow (activity above normal but not eruption-level). The park closes automatically when alert levels rise. Always check current SGC status before planning your visit.
- How do I get to Los Nevados National Park?
- The main access is from Manizales (2 hours by road) or from Pereira/Armenia via the coffee region. Most operators in Manizales offer day tours to the park for approximately COP 100,000-160,000 per person including transport. Independent access by car requires a 4WD for the final unpaved section.
- Is Nevado Santa Isabel easier than Nevado del Ruiz?
- Yes. Santa Isabel (4,965m) is the easiest of the Los Nevados glaciers to access and the standard ascent is a non-technical walk across snow and ice. Crampons and ice axe are required for the final glacier section. Most guided summit attempts on Santa Isabel go via the Termales sector near Pereira.
