Barichara’s location in the Santander highlands puts several worthwhile destinations within easy reach. The main options are Guane (a pre-colonial village at the end of the Camino Real), San Gil (the adventure sports hub of Colombia, 22km away), Chicamocha Canyon National Park (about an hour by road), and the quieter colonial town of Socorro to the south. Bucaramanga — the regional capital — is a longer day trip at two hours by road.
Guane via the Camino Real

Guane is the most natural day trip from Barichara — a small pre-colonial village of approximately 700 people at the bottom of a canyon descent, reached via the Camino Real (Royal Road), a stone-paved path built during the colonial era on top of an even older Guane indigenous route. The trail starts from the cemetery at the edge of Barichara and descends through dry tropical forest — tall cactus, century plants, and scrub vegetation — with long views over the canyon landscape. The footing is good on the original stone but slippery in wet conditions; start before 8am in any season to avoid the afternoon heat.
In Guane itself, the main draws are the Paleontological Museum (Museo Paleontológico, entry approximately COP 5,000, open Tuesday to Sunday), which holds an exceptional collection of marine fossils from the period when this canyon was seabed; the colonial church of Santa Lucía (1720s, free entry); and the general quietness of a village that tourism has not substantially changed. There is one or two basic restaurants and a few stalls selling artisan crafts. Spend an hour to two hours in the village before taking a shared jeep (chiva or Willys jeep) back up to Barichara.
Practical note: The jeep runs when full, not on a fixed schedule. Wait by the plaza and it will fill up within 30 to 60 minutes on most days. On weekdays in low season, it can take longer.
San Gil — Adventure Sports Capital

San Gil is Colombia’s main adventure sports destination and the practical base for the Santander highlands — a livelier, larger town (population approximately 46,000) that trades on its extreme sports offering rather than its colonial architecture. From Barichara, it is a short drive on a road that descends into the canyon before climbing again.
White-water rafting on the Río Fonce is the most popular activity — Class III to IV rapids, with commercial operators running half-day trips approximately COP 60,000 to 100,000 per person as of 2026 (all equipment included, minimum group size usually 4 people). The main stretches run near San Gil and near the town of Curití. Operators are concentrated on the main commercial street in San Gil and can be booked on the day, though weekends in high season warrant advance booking.
Paragliding operates primarily from the Piedecuesta area near Bucaramanga for the best thermals, but tandem flights are also available from sites nearer San Gil — prices approximately COP 150,000 to 250,000 for a tandem flight as of 2026, including transfer and around 20 to 30 minutes in the air.
Spelunking in the Cueva de Indios (approximately COP 20,000 to 30,000 entry, guides available for COP 20,000 extra) and the Cueva La Antigua are half-day options for visitors who find white-water rafting too intense. The caves contain stalactites, stalagmites, and a small underground river.
Zip-lining and canyoning packages are offered by several operators in San Gil, typically combined into a multi-activity half-day for COP 80,000 to 150,000.
Return to Barichara by shared jeep from San Gil’s bus terminal throughout the afternoon, last departure approximately 6pm.
Chicamocha Canyon National Park (Parque Nacional del Chicamocha)

The Parque Nacional del Chicamocha (often called Panachi) sits on the rim of the Chicamocha Canyon — one of the deepest canyons in the Americas, at approximately 2,000m from rim to river. The park is a large commercial complex on the canyon edge with a gondola cable car that crosses the canyon, adventure activities (paragliding, ziplines, a roller coaster), a cultural village showcasing Santandereano traditions, and viewing platforms over the canyon.
The canyon views are genuinely extraordinary — standing on the rim looking down and across to the opposite wall is one of the more dramatic viewpoints in Colombia. The cable car ride is a highlight even without the activity packages. The cultural shows and commercial aspects of the park are variable in quality.
Getting there from Barichara: The most practical option is hiring a private car or remise taxi in Barichara for approximately COP 80,000 to 120,000 each way. Alternatively, take a jeep to San Gil (COP 8,000–12,000), then a bus toward Bucaramanga and ask the driver to drop you at the Panachi entrance (approximately COP 15,000 extra). There is no direct public transport from Barichara to the park.
Socorro

A larger colonial town (population approximately 30,000) with good architecture, the Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Socorro (one of the largest colonial churches in Santander), and a central plaza with more daily-life commercial activity than Barichara. Socorro was important in the 1781 Comunero Revolt against Spanish colonial taxation — there is a modest museum and commemorative sites. A worthwhile half-day if you want more colonial architecture without the tourist polish of Barichara. Take a bus or shared taxi from San Gil.
Bucaramanga
Distance: Approximately 115km | Time: 2 hours by road | Cost: Direct bus from San Gil to Bucaramanga approximately COP 20,000–35,000
Bucaramanga is a full-day rather than a half-day trip from Barichara. The journey takes two hours via San Gil. The city offers shopping, a good food scene (particularly Santandereano cuisine at scale), and the base for accessing the Chicamocha Canyon from the Bucaramanga side (different viewpoints from Panachi). If you need urban amenities — a large supermarket, a hospital, international bank branches, a decent-sized pharmacy — Bucaramanga is where to go. An overnight in Bucaramanga makes more sense than a long day trip if you have specific urban errands.
Practical Transport Notes
Shared jeeps (chivas or Willys jeeps) are the main public transport between Barichara and San Gil. They depart from the Barichara plaza area when full — typically every 30 to 60 minutes during daylight hours. The fare is approximately COP 8,000 to 12,000. There is no fixed timetable; ask locally about the first and last departures for the day.
Private taxis from Barichara to San Gil cost approximately COP 40,000 to 60,000 and can be arranged through your accommodation or at the plaza. For Chicamocha or Bucaramanga, negotiate a full-day price: approximately COP 250,000 to 400,000 for the vehicle (split between passengers), including waiting time.
