Barichara is one of Colombia’s most walkable destinations. The historic centre is small and flat enough to navigate entirely on foot; the cobblestone streets are pedestrian-friendly during the day. Transport becomes relevant when you want to reach Guane, San Gil, the Chicamocha Canyon, or Bucaramanga. Here is what you need to know.
Getting to Barichara
From Bucaramanga
Bucaramanga (115km, approximately 2 hours by road) is the nearest major city and the most common arrival point if you are flying in to the region. The airport is Palonegro International (BGA), 30 minutes from Bucaramanga city centre.
From Bucaramanga, the standard public transport route is a bus from the Terminal de Transportes to San Gil (buses depart every 30 to 60 minutes, journey approximately 2 hours, fare COP 20,000–35,000 as of 2026) and then a shared jeep from San Gil’s terminal to Barichara (approximately 30 to 40 minutes, COP 8,000–12,000). This is the most economical option.
Private taxis from Bucaramanga to Barichara cost approximately COP 180,000 to 280,000 for the vehicle. Remise (booked private car) services are available through apps including InDriver in Bucaramanga.
From San Gil
San Gil is the main regional hub and just 22km from Barichara. Shared jeeps (traditional Willys jeeps or modern equivalents) run throughout the day from San Gil’s bus terminal, departing when full rather than on a fixed schedule — roughly every 30 to 60 minutes during daylight hours. Fare approximately COP 8,000–12,000 each way. The journey takes 30 to 40 minutes on a road that crosses canyon terrain.
Alternatively, private taxis from San Gil to Barichara cost approximately COP 40,000–60,000 and take about the same time without waiting for the jeep to fill.
From Bogotá
No direct buses run from Bogotá to Barichara. The route is: Bogotá to San Gil by bus (approximately 6 to 7 hours, various operators including Cotrans and Berlinas del Fonce, fares approximately COP 60,000–90,000), then shared jeep to Barichara. Multiple overnight options exist. Check at the Terminal de Transporte de Bogotá (Salitre terminal, Transversal 68) for departure times.
Flying Bogotá to Bucaramanga (approximately 55 minutes, airlines include Avianca and LATAM, fares from approximately COP 120,000–250,000 as of 2026 when booked in advance) and then proceeding by road is faster if you value time over budget.
Getting Around the Town
On Foot
Walking is both the default and the ideal way to experience Barichara. The town was built for pedestrians — the cobblestone streets are too narrow for significant traffic, and the scale means almost nothing is more than 15 minutes’ walk from anything else. The Parque Principal at the centre is the orientation point; the main streets radiate off it in a clear grid.
Key walking distances from the Parque Principal:
- Cemetery and Camino Real trailhead: approximately 10 minutes
- Mirador (canyon viewpoint): approximately 15 minutes
- Artisan district on Calle 5: approximately 5 minutes
- Fundación Lemniscata (fique paper workshop): approximately 12 minutes
The streets are uneven in places — colonial cobblestones are hard on thin-soled shoes and genuinely difficult for people with mobility impairments. Wear flat, closed-toe shoes with grip.
Taxis
There are local taxis and mototaxis operating within Barichara and for hire between the town and nearby destinations. Taxis in the town cost COP 5,000–8,000 for short trips. Mototaxis are cheaper (COP 3,000–5,000) but carry more risk on the canyon roads; they are mainly used by locals.
For trips to the Camino Real trailhead or the mirador, both are walkable — a taxi is only useful if you have heavy luggage or mobility constraints.

Practical Transport Notes
No Uber or Cabify in the area. App-based ride services do not operate in Barichara or San Gil as of 2026. InDriver has some coverage in Bucaramanga and for inter-city trips from there, but not within the Barichara-San Gil corridor. Cash negotiations with local drivers are the norm.
Jeep departures are demand-based. There is no timetable for shared jeeps — they go when the vehicle fills. On quiet weekdays, the wait can be 45 minutes to an hour. Plan accordingly and do not book a late departure from San Gil if you have a fixed connection from Bucaramanga.
Driving yourself. Renting a car from Bucaramanga and driving to Barichara is practical for visitors comfortable with Colombian mountain roads. The road from San Gil to Barichara is paved and well-signed. Parking in Barichara’s historic centre is limited — confirm with your accommodation. Petrol is available in San Gil; there is a small supply point in Barichara but do not rely on it.
Luggage. The shared jeeps are small and luggage space is limited. Large backpacks or multiple bags require negotiation — either arrange a private vehicle from the start or keep luggage compact.
Guided walking tours covering the Camino Real to Guane, the colonial centre, and local artisan workshops are available through tours in Barichara — a good option for orientation on arrival.
