Barichara Travel Guide
Plan your trip to Barichara - Colombia's most beautiful village, with cobblestone streets, sandstone architecture, and the Camino Real to Guane waiting below.
Barichara is consistently rated the most beautiful village in Colombia, and the claim is not hard to defend. The town’s sandstone architecture - built from a pale honey-coloured stone quarried locally - gives it a warmth and coherence unlike any other colonial settlement in the country. Every building, every church, every wall is made from the same local stone. The cobblestone streets are steep, the views over the Chicamocha canyon are dramatic, and the pace of life is genuinely slow.
The Camino Real - a pre-Hispanic stone path through the canyon to the smaller village of Guane - is one of the best half-day walks in South America.
Getting to Barichara
There is no direct transport from Bogota to Barichara. The route is Bogota - San Gil (6 to 7 hours by bus from Terminal del Norte, approximately COP 45,000 to 65,000 as of 2026), then San Gil to Barichara (20 minutes by colectivo or taxi, approximately COP 8,000 to 15,000).
From Bucaramanga, the journey is approximately 3 hours by bus to San Gil plus the Barichara colectivo. From Medellin, buses to San Gil take approximately 8 hours.
What to Do in Barichara
Walk the town - this sounds simple but Barichara rewards slow exploration. The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción on the main plaza is the finest sandstone church in Colombia (free entry during daylight hours). The Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad at the top of the village is equally impressive. The mirador on the cliff edge looks over the Chicamocha canyon - go at sunset.
The Camino Real to Guane is a 9-kilometre pre-Hispanic stone trail that descends through dry scrub and cactus to the village of Guane below. The walk takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Start early to beat the heat - by 10am the path is warm. Guane has a small archaeological museum (entry approximately COP 2,000 as of 2026) displaying Guane indigenous artefacts, and a few small restaurants where you can eat lunch before returning by jeep (approximately COP 10,000 per person as of 2026).
San Gil (20 minutes away) is the adventure capital of the Colombian Andes - class IV/V rafting on the Río Fonce and Suárez, paragliding from nearby hills, caving, and bungee jumping. Day trips from Barichara to San Gil are straightforward by colectivo. Book an adventure activity from San Gil through a registered operator.
Artisan workshops - Barichara has a small community of artisans working in the traditional fique fibre (agave-like plant), stone carving, and pottery. Several workshops along Calle 5 welcome visitors. Fundación Escuela Taller de Barichara is a craft school that preserves traditional techniques; visit in the morning when classes are active.
Capilla de Santa Barbara and Capilla de Jesús are two smaller colonial chapels within the village that are often unlocked and quiet.
