Medellín sits in a valley ringed by steep green hills, and those hills generate strong thermal conditions for most of the year. On a clear morning, a dozen tandem paragliders lift off from San Felix in the hills above the city and ride thermals over the barrios below. Looking down on Medellín from 500 metres above the valley floor is a perspective that most visitors do not get, and the combination of consistent thermals, experienced pilots, and easy access from the city makes this one of the best paragliding experiences in South America.
The activity is straightforward. You book with an operator, a driver collects you from El Poblado or wherever you are staying, you are driven 45–60 minutes to the launch site, you are briefed in two minutes, you run three steps off a hill, and you spend 15–40 minutes in the air with a certified pilot. The technical difficulty is zero. The view is significant.
Launch Sites
San Felix
San Felix in the Bello municipality, north of the city, is the most-used launch site for tourist tandem flights. The elevation sits around 2,200 metres and thermals build reliably from around 9am on clear days. From here, you fly over the northern barrios of Medellín with views over the cable car lines, the hillside comunas, and the valley floor. Flights from San Felix typically run 15–25 minutes.
The site is accessible by road in around 45–60 minutes from El Poblado. Most operators include transport in the package price. The landing zone is a flat field at lower elevation, where the pilot brings you down for a gentle upright landing.
El Peñol
The area around El Peñol and Guatapé — about 80 kilometres east of Medellín — offers a dramatically different flying environment. Launch sites overlook the Embalse del Peñol reservoir, with views across an enormous body of water and the scattered rock formations of the antioqueño landscape. Flights from this area tend to be higher and longer, with some operators offering 30–40 minute extended flights.
The Guatapé paragliding experience is often combined with a day trip to see La Piedra del Peñol (the famous monolithic rock). Operators running this combination charge approx $80–90 USD for the flight and arrange day-trip logistics separately.
Rionegro and El Carmen de Viboral
The eastern highlands near the José María Córdova airport also have paragliding operations. These are quieter than San Felix and attract more local participants than tourists. A handful of operators run flights here at comparable prices. If you are already at the Rionegro airport area — which handles most international flights into Medellín — this is a convenient option before heading into the city.

They run group transport from El Poblado to San Felix on a set schedule (usually departing 8am and 10am), which can mean slightly more waiting time but lower prices for solo travellers who don’t want to pay for private pickup. What to Expect on the Day
Transport pickup: Most operators collect from El Poblado, though some have fixed meeting points. Confirm pickup location when booking. The drive to San Felix takes 45–60 minutes through the city and into the hills.
Briefing: The pre-flight briefing is short — how to run on launch, how to sit in the harness, what to expect on landing. Pilots will not let you take off until they are satisfied with conditions. On some days, launches are delayed an hour for thermals to build properly.
The flight: Once airborne, the pilot does everything. You sit in a seated harness position and experience the thermals. The sensation is closer to floating than to jumping — initial altitude gain can be rapid if a strong thermal picks you up on launch. Most first-time paragliders describe the flight as significantly calmer than they expected.
Landing: Landings are into a designated field or open area. The pilot manages the approach and you are usually asked to lift your legs slightly before ground contact. Falls on landing are uncommon with an experienced pilot.
Photos and video: If you want footage, arrange this before launch. Most pilots fly with a GoPro attached to a selfie pole that captures both the view and your face. Footage is typically transferred on a USB or via WhatsApp afterwards.
What to Wear
Dress in layers — it is meaningfully cooler at 2,200 metres than in the city, and the airspeed during flight adds to the chill. A light jacket is worth bringing even if it is warm in Medellín. Closed-toe shoes are required (sandals are not suitable for running a launch). Sunglasses are helpful but should be secured with a strap.
Booking Tips
Book at least a day ahead during peak season (December–January, July–August). Walk-in availability exists in shoulder season but availability on specific dates is not guaranteed.
Ask explicitly about weather policy. Reputable operators will not fly in unsafe conditions and will reschedule or refund if weather grounds operations. Operators who push through marginal conditions are a red flag.
Check AEROCIVIL certification. All commercial paragliding pilots in Colombia should hold current AEROCIVIL authorisation. Established operators display this proactively; you can ask to see it.
Combine with Guatapé. If you plan to visit El Peñol and La Piedra del Peñol anyway, adding a paragliding flight to that day makes logistical sense and reduces overall transport costs compared to two separate excursions.
Altitude acclimatisation: Medellín sits at 1,500 metres elevation and San Felix launch sites are higher still. If you have just arrived from sea level, give yourself a day to acclimatise before physically exerting yourself on a launch run.
